THE THING Quarterly

an experimental publication in collaboration with Will Rogan,  2007-present

issue 9 (Ryan Gander) wrapping party, Dec. 2009 San Francisco

Will Rogan and I began THE THING in the fall of 2007 as part of a residency at San Francisco’s Southern Exposure.

THE THING is a quarterly periodical in the form of an object. Each year, four artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers are invited to create an everyday object that somehow incorporates text. The object is reproduced and hand wrapped at wrapping parties and then mailed to the homes of the subscribers with the help of the United States Postal Service.

THING contributors have included contributors such as James Franco, Dave Eggers,  Miranda July, Allora & CalzadillaAnne Walsh, Starlee Kine, Matthew Higgs,  Kota Ezawa, Trisha Donelly, Tucker Nichols, Lucy Pullen, Ryan Gander,  Allora & Calzadilla, the writer Jonathan Lethem, and experimental geographer Trevor Paglen . The issues have ranged from pull-down window shades with text silk-screened onto them, to beermats (coasters), to door-stops.  Upcoming issues include contributions by Mike Mills, David Shrigley, Tauba Auerbach, and Ben Marcus.

With an international subscriber base of 700-1000, THE THING has been featured on PRI’s Marketplace, Frieze Magazine, the SF Chronicle, the New York Times T magazine, the LA Times, Readymade, Art21 Blog, the New Yorker Blog, Art 21‘s blog, Flavorpill NY, LA, Miami and Chicago and an upcoming article in the February issue of Artforum.  THE THING has run projects at Southern Exposure in San Francisco, Artists Space in NY and Lisson Gallery in London and SFMOMA.  It has participated in the NY Artist Book Fair and the NADA fair in Miami.

THE THING is in the collections of the The Getty, National Gallery of Canada, the SFMOMA research library, The San Francisco Art Institute, the San Francisco Public Library, and the Baltimore Museum of Modern Art.
